Flying Without Supervision Competency Check Sheet
Purpose of Check Sheet
- To check that new members with A or B certificates are safe to fly on the site.
- Members who have not attained an A certificate but, are reasonably competent flyers, can be checked and certified to fly without supervision for a period of one year. This will have to be renewed every year if an A certificate is not obtained.
- After passing their tests the above will be certified capable of safely flying without supervision and their record annotated to show this.
Site Safety Rules
- If flying on your own let someone know where you are.
- Parking area
- Positioning of flight box
- Define flying area
- Must not fly beyond the edge of runway nearest the hangers
- Avoid flying over solar farm. Difficult to retrieve aircraft in the event of an accident
- Do not fly over the control tower. It is occupied.
Hazards
- Vehicular traffic crossing and on the runway. Do not fly over vehicles.
- Pedestrians walking and dog walkers. Stop flying if there is a danger of overflying them.
- The owner of the runway has a light aircraft which lands and takes off on the runway. Any sign of it landing or taking off then land immediately and do not fly.
- Be aware that winds blowing from the hanger direction can cause severe turbulence even if they are relatively light.
Competence to Fly Without Supervision
- Plane being flown should be within skill capability.
- Able to carry out proper pre-flight checks.
- Fail safe set.
- Range check if required
- All controls function and operate in the correct direction.
- Engine starts carried out with plane facing away from people and cars.
- Prior to take off check runway is clear and pointed into wind.
- Take off in a straight line and climb to safe height.
- Fly a circuit at safe height keeping within the designated flying area. Then fly circuit in opposite direction.
- Carry out a safe landing.
