WE FLY FOR FUN

The earliest minutes available seem to be from June 1984 and it would seem that a small club existed from about 1982. This would meet in member’s houses.

The committee structure was similar to the present one. Sadly some of those holding posts are no longer with us. John joined in 1986 and has kindly given the following report of the early days.:

In 1986 RAF West Raynham was still occupied by the RAF the gate was manned by armed personnel of the RAF Regiment. If your name was not on their list then you did not get in so a new members list had to be issued every time a new member joined. At that time we flew from the north end of the main runway.

As you have already mentioned, Bloodhound rockets pointed at Ivan were still present in the missile compound. You might imagine, one or two models had to end up in the compound. Retrieval required that the offending member be escorted by armed guards into he compound. Rapier missiles were also kept at the base but these were housed in the hangers.

Club social meetings were held bi-monthly at Hempton Church Hall. Each attending member chipped in a few pence to boost club funds. The club was not as prosperous in the formative years as it is today
